The Argument against Particularism

Let us begin the argument proper by laying out the case against particularism. For present purposes, I shall be dealing with particularists in the Augustinian tradition (in a manner similar to chapter 4), which includes the Reformed. Recall that the phrase “Augustinian tradition” is a term of art. Nevertheless, I think it represents the majority of classical Christian theologians who have been (a) compatibilists on the question of free will (that is, God’s determining what comes to pass is compatible with human freedom and moral responsibility for their actions) and (b) particularists with respect to salvation. Such Augustinians have traditionally claimed that God restricts the number of elect to some number less than the total number of humanity. This we called the restricted-elect view.
